Chi. Life force. Found in all of us, and all things: it’s the foundation of Feng Shui. By directing the flow of energy in your home, Feng Shui consultants help you add energy to areas of your home that align with aspects of your life (e.g., love, career, creativity, etc.). The result, when reinforced with specific feng shui cures and intention, can help us attract what we need to excel in different aspects of our lives.

But the flow of the energy is only one aspect of feng shui. Understanding the kind of energy in your home is just as important and can help you determine where there might be blocks to the chi flow or where there might be energy that no longer supports you and your aspirations.

You can begin to decipher the energy in your home by first doing a physical check as you walk through your home. Is your body relaxed or is it tense? Do you feel light or do you feel a weight as you move from room to room? Is breathing easy or is it stilted? You can also check your emotions as you enter your space. Do you feel happy to be home or are you dreading walking through the door? Perhaps there’s a room that makes you feel especially calm, while another makes you feel anxious or even angry.

These checks can help you get a sense for the kind of energy in your home, but you may not be clear as to why it is the way it is. When chi is blocked in a home, this can contribute to this, but you’ll also want to look at the things in your home. We have associations with everything in our spaces. When they’re positive associations, they can create positive, supportive chi. When you have negative associations, they can create heavy chi that reduces the flow of energy and reinforces the negative association every time you see the “thing.” This helps you see the energetic imprint you’re creating in your home.

That energetic imprint, and learning why it is the way it is, is a powerful first step to making positive changes in your life by modifying the energy you’re creating in your home. The next step, working with a Feng Shui consultant, is to direct the energy to support what you want in your life and include cures that will help you achieve your dreams. Then the real fun – the results you’ll achieve – can begin!
