The word Solitude does not evoke a sense of happiness in everyone: Solitary confinement, loneliness, orders to stay at home, being an outcast… are all unpleasant sensations. Human beings are social creatures, and there is a sense that we MUST be with others in a group to be ‘right’ or ‘well.’

For introverts, we have also known that being with ourselves can be a beautiful feeling of reset, peace and serenity. Even for those who love the stimulation of other people’s thoughts and words, we are at an unprecedented time. No other human beings on this beautiful planet have ever been constantly bombarded by the thoughts and opinions of others, near and far, 24 hours a day.  As rich as this option can be, it’s also nefariously nibbling away at our ability to be in SOLITUDE.

If you are feeling fear or anger, solitude is a powerful method to rebalance and find your own inner compass. Our message this month of SOLITUDE reminds us to step back, be still and find our own self-awareness.

Some ways to use the power of SOLITUDE:

  • Turn off phones, tvs, radios, and just ‘be’ in the quiet.
  • If possible, be in nature or turn on the sounds of nature (bird song, rainstorms, all downloadable to your favorite music playing device). This can help block out any distracting noises from outside.
  • Take the time to focus on your own breath. Notice it, then deepen it. Breathe in the tranquility of nature. Breathe out the chaos of the world.
  • Allow your body to be very still. Notice how it feels.  Breathe in health and relaxation, breathe out stress and tense feelings.

Now, in this solitude, tune into your higher self. Acknowledge that there is power in being still.  If it feels non-productive, know that racing off into the wrong direction is not a great use of your energy either. Be still. Be silent. Envision the outcome you want in life; how you want your life to feel… how you want the world to feel. Maybe you don’t know the path. Use the  solitude, envision and feel the desired peace, respect, and harmony in the world and in your life…

You and your emotions make a difference in the world. The more we hold an energy of fear, the more fear is in the world. The more we take the time to center, and feel what we desire, the more we can help shift out of fear.
