It was the rational voice of my husband asking this question. And to be fair, it was a legitimate question.

  • Company was arriving in 8 days.
  • Thanksgiving was in 12 days.
  • Christmas was in 42 days.

And we were in full demolition mode.

To be honest, the question took me off guard. I couldn’t remember why I had agreed to a timeline that started days before Thanksgiving and ended days before Christmas.

“Because” was the only answer I could muster. In the light of my husband’s logic, agreeing to a full (down to the studs) kitchen renovation in the midst of the holidays sounded insane.

Inspiration can feel that way. It often looks like an unusual idea that is borderline strange.

As I racked my brain for a more complete answer than “because,” I remembered the feeling I had when we first talked about how and when to renovate the kitchen. It was like all the cells in my body were singing the Halleluiah chorus.

My kitchen is in the center of my home also known as the Heart of the Home in feng shui. It’s not only associated with the energy of our mind, body and spirit, it also holds the energy that radiates out to all other areas of our home. It’s a big deal space in the feng shui world. It’s also the one area of my home where I hadn’t thought about making any significant changes. Until months ago, when inspiration said yes to a holiday remodel.

But here I was months past my dance with inspiration. All that was in front of me was a neon sign flashing hard work and inconvenience. How were we going to make sweet potato casserole and corn bread pudding without an oven?

I had forgotten that inspiration is connected to the Divine and always leads to expansion. Even when that expansion isn’t readily obvious.

With a list of contractors in place, we moved forward despite our doubts. We packed dishes. Pried tiles off walls. Removed cabinets one by one.

It was the last cabinet removed that had my heart drop and soar in the same breath.

An 18” blob of mold sat behind the cabinet near the floor.

First, my practical-self jumped into action. I called professionals who all told me the same thing. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I had catastrophized.

Next, my energetic-self translated the message I had just been given. In feng shui, one of the things water represents is emotions. And what happens when emotions are stagnant and aren’t processed. They get moldy!

Why I was inspired to gut my entire kitchen had just been revealed. The heart of my home associated with my mind, body and spirit needed an upgrade. I was (quite literally) shown what it looks like when I turn off my emotions in order to push myself harder.

Now, I was given the gift of writing a new script. Thanks to sheetrock being removed, I was able to drop rose quartz inside my walls to anchor the energy of love. And, then write beautiful affirmation of love over the new sheetrock.

What about you?

Is the center of your home asking for change?

Here’s a short exercise you can do to find out:

  1. Find a spot to sit in the center of your home, even if it’s a closet or bathroom.
  2. Take a few deep breaths.
  3. Place your hand on your heart.
  4. Ask your soul what change wants to happen in this space, so the heart of your home is aligned with your heart.
  5. Trust the message you hear.

Here’s to taking care of yourself and aligning you and your home.
