Often times, when sitting in stopped or very slow traffic, I wonder what the cause of the backup is. Traffic had been moving at a steady pace, then all of a sudden, everyone is stopped, then moving at a snail’s pace. And then, when I get to the place on the road where the traffic begins to flow freely again, I’m even more curious about the initial cause of the slowdown. Sometimes backups are caused by some cars moving at a different pace than others, fighting against the collective flow. Other times, the timing of traffic lights can be off, not allowing enough cars to pass through during each cycle. And still there may have been an accident at some point, where a driver was not fully present to what was going on around them. How much better would our travels be if we all flowed with traffic, allowed merging and exits with grace and ease, and were fully present to what was occurring within and around us?

Similarly, the flow of energy in our lives yearns to move at a certain pace; and often times, we may fight against the flow out of fear, resistance, impatience or any number of things. And when this happens, we create ways to block the flow by overpacking our schedules, engaging in procrastination, pretending we don’t see what needs to be done, or simply by making excuses and blaming other people, events, or circumstances for our “stuckness,” or lack of flow. Sometimes, it happens so subtly, that we don’t even notice that we are stuck. Then, all of a sudden, just like with the traffic, everything in your life comes to a halt.

One thing we can do to clear the blockages and open the flow of life up is to clear clutter. Making changes in our lives is only a thought away. People often focus on the physical clutter in their spaces, but it’s the clutter we do not easily see that can cause slowdowns or even hard stops in the flow of our lives. I invite you to reflect on how you spend your time. Are you overcommitting yourself? Are there too many meetings and events on your calendar? Or do you have a “to do” list that is a mile long? I encourage you to reflect on these things and determine if they are all leading you to the goals and intentions you have set for your life. Once you list all of the activities in your day for a few days, prioritize them. Which ones bring you joy? Which ones are done out of guilt? Or obligation? Which ones tank your energy just thinking about them?

The more joy you have in every activity that you do, the more time you will have, and the more balance and calm you will feel throughout the day – no matter how busy the day may appear. Examining your thoughts about your life and your experiences is essential when clearing clutter as your perception frames everything. When you continue to overpack your life with activities that are not in alignment with your heart and mind, you create additional slowdowns in the flow of your life because you are fighting against your own energy. When you clear your clutter, don’t forget that which is invisible and start feeling more inspired, refreshed and joyful as you flow through each and every day!
