Our homes are an integral part of our life’s journey, mirroring back to us not only parts of our journey but our present experiences and also our hopes and dreams for the future. During our life, we acquire things that we need or want and they all in some way reflect snapshots of our life at the time we acquired them. When you reflect on the things that you have invited into your home during your journey, do they uplift your energy or bring your energy down? Do they bring more joy to your journey and support you in focusing on the joyful aspects of your journey?
During the past nine years, I experienced three separate cancer diagnoses. As you might imagine, there were items I needed to support me through the different periods of surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and general recovery. While these items were supportive at the time and I was grateful for being supported in many different ways, keeping these items at the end of each part of the journey brought my energy down. One way of shifting this energy was to release each item, expressing gratitude for the support received and gratitude for not needing it any longer. Some of them I was able to give to others who needed them. Other items that could not be recycled were placed in the trash. Along with the expression of gratitude while releasing each item, I focused on the intention of experiencing vibrant health now and in the future.
Even though I’ve been supporting others with clearing clutter for years, I’m always delightfully surprised to feel what a difference clearing clutter in my own space makes. The energy is lifted and clear while feeling more expansive. Releasing items from the past does not erase the past. As we move through different parts of our life’s journey, we can choose which items we wish to keep as part of our history and identity.
Again, I invite you to take a reflective look around your spaces. Look at each item in your space with a fresh perspective and ask yourself a few questions:
“Does this item fit the vision that I have for my life now and moving forward?”
“Does looking at this item uplift my energy and bring more joy into my daily life?”
“Does this tell a part of my life’s story that inspires me?”
There are many other questions that you could ask about these objects. As you reflect, also consider how keeping the object makes you feel. Are you excited to keep it, or does it feel like a burden? The objects in your space have been brought into the space by someone’s choice, yours or someone else’s. Remember that keeping or releasing items is a choice.
I invite you to honor your journey by consciously choosing which items you want to share your space with. Items can be considered guests and not permanent residents – just because they share part of your journey does not mean they have to be there for the entire journey.
