The Pandemic left a mark on us all. Perhaps for some it is the grief of losing of loved ones, or the guilt from the inability to be with their loved ones in a time of need. Perhaps it was loss of a job, a lifestyle, or a sense of safety in the world. Perhaps the biggest change is the pervasive sense of fear that was instilled in us all. A fear that divided family members, communities, friends and lovers.  It changed us, and we didn’t ask to be changed, and we might even be very angry… but it happened. As the pandemic is shifting from the world focus, people shift into a new normal. Some people are delighted to get back to the same travel and adventure as before. But many, cannot view the world in the same way again. Fear has a grip on them.

My mom is one of those many. At almost 90, she has been terrified of COVID since even before it was big news in 2020. She stopped going to church, seeing friends, going shopping, because she felt she would die if she caught it. She said that to us daily. She listened to all the news, read the local paper with the daily infected and death count, and kept a tablet next to her chair with the hand recorded statistics. Because of her age and medical conditions, she was sure she would die if she got it. She kept herself as safe as could be ( and it meant all those around her needed to live a lifestyle to keep her safe too). Then this summer, she needed a couple of medical procedures that necessitated going into the hospital for outpatient surgery. Several days after the last surgery, while recovering at home, she began to cough, and feel achy. We chalked it up to allergies and surgery aches… but after a couple days, we did the home COVID test, and it came back positive. And my mom was beyond terrified. Her worst fear was coming true. She had COVID.  And in her mind the next sentence is ‘and I’m going to die’.

I know the power of the mind and our beliefs; I work with this power with clients all the time. And I was scared, because of the power of all the negative programming my mom did to herself. With all my might as a coach, I started giving her new phrases to say,

“Thank God you have the current version of COVID Mom, it’s not nearly as bad.’

‘Look Mom, you have not lost your sense of taste and smell, you are doing great’.

I got visiting nurses to come and check on her, and their words of encouragement helped reprogram her as well. I also did feng shui tweaks to uplift the energy of the home, and hid things like the tablet with statistics.

I’m happy to say that 6 weeks out from her diagnosis, she is completely recovered, and feeling great. She is even eating better that prior to all of this, and went shopping at the grocery store for the first time in a long time. Mom stepped out from the fear she has been living in for nearly 3 years.  It is a wonderful thing to see her happy again.

Sometimes facing the thing we fear the most can set us free. Sometimes that darkest path is the one to a new wonderful start. The Spirit Keeper of the East message this month celebrates that we can have a new beginning, a fresh start. It also acknowledges that we might have travelled from a very dark and scary time, or at the very least, given up a belief that has been holding us back.

What fears or burdens are you carrying? What kind of fear can you release today, so that you can celebrate the dawn of a new way of being?

Think about what self-talk you have, what negative belief phrase you might say all the time, and create change in you by changing that phrase. Create words that are more uplifting, and you will shift your energy and beliefs. Your mind is powerful.

No matter how dark the night, the sun rises in the east each day.  Wishing you happy new vibrant beginnings!
