Nearly seven years ago, as I was being prepped for surgery, I became extremely anxious upon discovering that I would in fact be awake during the surgery. To top that, I was also experiencing an allergic reaction to the first antibiotic that I was given. By the time I got into the operating room, my anxiety level was through the roof. Yet, a voice inside told me to slow down, breath and be calm. Then, another nudge told me to ask for support from the angels. I started to imagine myself being wrapped in angel wings as the procedure began.

Around the same time, I noticed a nurse in the room moving some equipment around. She told me it was the end of her shift, but she decided that she was going to stay with me anyway to make sure I was okay. She stood by my side throughout the surgery, verbally checking on me and reassuring me. After the procedure, when everyone else had left the room, she remained, bent down closer to me, and told me I would be fine and said, “I’m not supposed to tell you things like this because it’s not protocol, but have you ever heard of Louise Hay?” I had. The nurse then encouraged me to look at Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life book and affirmations about healing and to stay positive throughout my cancer treatment. She reassured me that I would be fine if I just trust believe that better days are coming.

As time more time passed after the surgery (even later that same day), I began to question if that nurse was physically there with me in the operating room. Yes, I was under local anesthesia, but the entire experience felt other worldly and continued to set the tone for what I would experience throughout the next seven months of my chemotherapy and other medical treatments and recovery. What I have discovered and what became very clear to me during that time is that magic is all around us every day. All we need to do is to trust that we are supported by the seen and unseen, and that all is working in our favor even in the darkest or most frightening of times.

So how do we maintain this trust in the Universe and acknowledge more of the magic in our lives? For answers, let’s look to some aspects of Soul Coaching® that I’ve both learned, experienced, and taught that can support us with living in trust and calling in more magic into our lives. First, learn to become a sacred observer in your own life, be present to what is occurring and make time to reflect upon the meaning that you give to events in your life. When we take time to objectively look at what’s happening, we can make an intentional choice about the meaning we give to an event in our lives. We do have the power to choose if we label an event as good or bad and how we view it frames the outcome and the events that follow. And how we view even the worst of times can shift the energy and attract either more of what you see or something else that you desire but is not visibly present for you yet. I could have chosen to view the cancer diagnosis as the absolute worst thing ever and lived in the upset. Yet, while it certainly was a time of incredible challenge and discomfort, it was also a time of learning, healing, and growth for me and for those in my life.

Another invaluable lesson I’ve learned from Soul Coaching® is the power of gratitude. Gratitude for what is currently present in your life attracts more to be grateful for. It acts as a magnet that brings more of what you truly desire into your life as you focus on what is wonderful about your present circumstances. Even on my worst days of chemotherapy treatment, I remained grateful for things that I previously took for granted, like simply being able to walk to the bathroom unassisted.  A great way to reflect on your gratitude is to keep a Gratitude Journal, a place to reflect on your day and to hold the energy of what you are grateful for each day.

Another aspect of gratitude that I don’t feel is recognized enough is the importance of asking for support. While gratitude can be an acknowledgement and celebration of what we receive daily in our lives, we also need to be open to asking for and receiving support. In doing so, we remain available and receptive to the many opportunities for growth, change, and expansion that are present for us. This support can come in many ways, including through our interactions with another person or even through a sudden shift in emotions, a new thought, or an unexpected experience. Our ability to be present and recognize the signs in our lives also supports our ability to acknowledge and accept when help is present for us.

In closing, my wish for you is that you embrace the magic in your daily life, be present and open to all types of support that are available in each moment. Even when you can’t see the path ahead, trust and gratitude can carry you forward.
