“Medicine Wheel Feng Shui is based on the innate understanding that ancient people had about the natural forces that shaped their world. These wise predecessors instinctively understood the rhythms of the elements and the magnetic flow of the four cardinal directions were powerful forces which profoundly affected all life on earth. They knew that within each element were patterns of energy that permeated the universe. They used this understanding to develop cosmological models to orient themselves on earth and create a sense of balance in their homes. The word medicine does not refer to western allopathic medicine but rather whatever helps you have a greater connection to spirit and the natural world around you. The medicine wheel is a symbolic sacred circle that provided a context for life.
Using Medicine Wheel Feng Shui in your home can deepen your connection to the cycles of nature and can bring a natural perspective to your life. The medicine wheel honors all cycles in life, the circle of birth, death and rebirth, the cycle of the seasons, of the rising and setting sun, of the full and new moon, dark and light, hot and cold. When we embrace the understanding of the medicine wheel, it allows us to take part in the great cycle of life. We see our contributions in relation to the greater whole .
Our homes can either separate us from nature or connect us more deeply to the source of this power. The medicine Wheel deepens our connection to the earth. In a profound way it helps us heal the earth. When we honor the forces of nature in our home, our dwellings can become templates for harmonious union with the earth.” – excerpt from Feng Shui for the Soul, Denise Linn, 1999
When Denise created Medicine Wheel Feng Shui many years ago it blended her native Cherokee ancestral traditions, the way various ancient asian feng shui practices connect homes with directions and elements, and looked at how we can incorporate understanding that within the homes that we have now. Within our Interior Alignment® school we have two feng shui certifications, the Instinctive Feng Shui™ which is based more on the Chinese philosophies of the bagua and the elements, and our Advanced Program of Medicine Wheel Feng Shui.
While in some ways, the Medicine Wheel might seem like a more simple application, with only 4 directions as opposed to 8, the method we use is to understand the person, and their elemental clan archetype, look at the décor and architecture of the home to see how they fit, and then work with ceremony and symbolism to honor the compass directions within the home, and what aspect of the cycle they represent. For example, the east is the direction of new beginnings, so if the client wanted to begin a new project, symbolism could be placed in this area representing the project, or just supporting the energy of new beginnings. This system is subtle but powerful. It does not demand redecorating your space, but simply to connect more deeply to yourself, what you desire, and apply that to your home.
You can learn more about this system in Denise’s Book ‘Feng Shui for the Soul’. If you would like to work with one of our certified practitioners, you can find them on our website by visiting the link below, scrolling down to the full practitioner list, and putting MWFS in the search bar:
