As I reflect on the journey of simplifying my life and learning how to travel lightly, I realize that it’s been a profound process of shedding layers, both physically and emotionally. It all began with a realisation – that my tendency to rush around everywhere and fill each day to its brim stemmed from a desire to live fully, yet often resulted in overwhelm and burnout.

This epiphany struck me during a Soul Journey that took me back to the sudden loss of a dear friend to suicide. During this period of deep grieving, I made a pact with myself, in his memory, to embrace each day as if it were my last. I committed to infusing every moment with meaning, ensuring also that everyone in my life knew their life MATTERED through my life, actions, and work.

However, this commitment became a double-edged sword. While I prided myself on an ability to fit four days into one and relished in the accolades of traveling the globe and constant productivity, I neglected the crucial aspect of rest and replenishment. I eliminated distractions and downtime, even throwing out my TV, believing that being constantly engaged was the key to living life to the fullest. Little did I know, this relentless pursuit was also draining me of vitality and joy.

It wasn’t until I embraced the power of feminine presence – the art of BEing rather than just doing – that I truly understood the value of rest and stillness. I discovered that my introverted nature thrived on deep rest, reflection, and recharge. Thus, I embarked on a journey of simplification, stripping away the excess in my life to prioritise what truly mattered.

These discoveries arrived at a time when I was making big moves and changes in my life. So, in addition to decluttering my level of activity and spending more time in restfulness, I started to examine what was serving me and what I was filling my life with because I thought I SHOULD. I began to simplify my days and prioritize what was most fulfilling. I transitioned from living in the hustle and bustle of Sydney and then New York, where I worked across time zones and flew back and forth every few months to facilitate back-to-back days of workshops. Now, I find myself residing in a tiny beach town in Jervis Bay, with fewer commitments and more time to simply be. I enjoyed spending time with myself, friends, and nature, and rediscovered the pleasure of slowing down. Initially, it felt strange. The rush dissipated, the constant pressure to do things diminished, and amidst work still flowing in, I often woke up contemplating, “Hmm, what adventure shall I enjoy in my breaks today?” Now, don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all rainbows, roses, and unicorns… there was a significant amount of discomfort, deep inner healing, and an examination of the costs associated with always saying YES. And in this, I discovered that my NO blessed my truest YES.

Finally, as I welcomed more peacefulness, stillness, and grace into my life, and shed so much from the inside out, I knew it was time to return to the city for a fresh new beginning, and the trust I could continue to CHOOSE peace within the chaos.

As I write this, I find myself back in the hustle and bustle of the city, ironically during one of the busiest months I’ve had in years as I prepare for another major life reset. However, amidst the chaos, I can still vividly picture myself standing amidst the gentle lull of the waves in my tiny beach town. This image serves as a reminder of the transformative power of simplifying my days and life by being present and focusing on ONE thing at a time.

Through this journey, I’ve learned four simple yet profound steps to simplify your life and travel lightly:

Step 1: Embrace Rest – Begin by acknowledging the importance of rest in nurturing your body, mind, and soul to allow safety within your nervous system and brain. Allow yourself to slow down, be kind to yourself, savour moments of stillness, and recharge your energy reserves. By honouring your need for rest, you’ll discover a newfound sense of peace and vitality.

Step 2: Declutter Your Life – Take stock of your commitments, relationships, and possessions, and release anything that no longer serves you. Simplify your surroundings to create space for clarity and fulfillment. Let go of the excess to make room for what truly matters. Know it’s completely ok to say NO, without any excuses, justifications or reasons.

Step 3: Prioritize Fulfillment – Shift your focus from obligations to fulfillment. Learn to say no to activities and commitments that don’t align with your values or bring your heart or purpose alive. Prioritize experiences that nourish your soul and bring meaning to your life. This doesn’t mean only choose easy things, including things that feel hard, new challenges, activities, learnings, and endeavours, is actually when fulfilment, resilient and grit is at its peak.

Step 4: Cultivate Presence and Gratitude – Practice being fully present in each moment and cultivate gratitude for the simple pleasures of life. Slow down, enjoy and acknowledge the beauty around you, and appreciate the abundance in your life. Schedule “Spontaneous Days” where you wake up without any plans and allow your heart and life to lead the way. By embracing presence and gratitude, you’ll find fulfilment in the richness of each day.

Through the ups and downs of life’s journey, I’ve discovered that true fulfillment doesn’t come from a constantly busy life, but from embracing the ebbs and flows and cherishing moments of stillness, connection, and presence. By embracing rest, decluttering life, prioritising fulfilment, and cultivating gratitude, I’ve unlocked a newfound sense of peace and purpose, even amidst the busyness and chaos.

I invite you this month to embark on your own journey of simplification and lightness. Take a moment to pause, breathe, and reflect on what truly matters to you. And remember, the path to a lighter, more fulfilling life begins with a single step. ❤️

Big PEACEFUL love, K
