I was exhausted, exhilarated, and hopeful.

It was the last day of one of those soul-excavating retreats that have you promising to stop hiding under the covers.

During one of the breaks, the instructor wandered out to the bench where a friend and I were sitting. After I off handedly mentioned that something was scary, she turned to me and said, “Dorena, you know you say that a lot. I don’t think you’re really scared. I think that’s old stuff.”

That comment wandered in and out of my consciousness for over six years. I kept wondering am I really afraid of something? And if so, what is it?

Honestly, I didn’t know the answer until I went through a 6-month period where I cracked or shattered….

  • 3 brand new crystal vases
  • 2 glass coffee mugs
  • 1 antique crystal bowl from my grandmother
  • 1 free form crystal bowl

When my house speaks to me, I listen.

I just had to figure out what all the breaking glass meant.

Because I make my living playing in the feng shui world where our outer world mirrors are inner world, I started looking at all the clues.

  • Glass 👉  symbolizes the element of water
  • Water 👉  symbolizes emotions
  • Break 👉  symbolizes a pattern that wants to change

As I stayed with the curiosity of what my house was telling me, I began to understand that I was the glass containers. And it was other people’s emotions that I was holding at the expense of my own.

My house was telling me it was time to break the pattern. That I no longer needed to hold other people’s emotions and displace my own.

What was next now that I’d received the message from my house?

First, I asked the deeper question.

Where did this pattern come from? Why have I always been so vigilant about caretaking other people’s emotions and running away from my own?

This deeper question led me to a grief coach and unraveling childhood memories when other people’s emotions were scary. I began to understand why I’ve always adapted to others, played small, and detached from how I was feeling.

After 6 years of wondering why I frequently say “that’s scary,” I finally understood.

Second, I enlisted the support of my home by adding more water energy to help my emotions begin to flow. I began noticing that I’d unexpectedly feel sad or that I’d admit to feeling tired or I’d recognize when I was angry.

How about you?

Do you feel like you need to express more emotions or do you feel like you’re caught in a tidal wave of emotions.

If you’re wanting to more fully express your emotions, try adding more of the water element to your home. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, try reducing the water element in your home.

To help you out, here are the ways the water element can be represented in the home:

  • Things that are black or dark tonal in color.
  • Things that are wavy or have a freeform pattern.
  • Large mirrors.
  • Glass objects.
  • Images of water.
  • Water elements, like a tabletop fountain or a fish tank.

It can be fun to take a journey through your home and notice just how much of this element is making an appearance.

Here’s to balancing your emotions.
